Playing a round of golf in Maui is a vacation in itself. The island is famous the world over for great golf courses that combine beauty, challenge and enjoyment. Among all Maui golf courses, Wailea and Makena resorts top the list. Below is a brief overview of Makena Wailea golf courses.

Makena Resort
Home of the Hawaii State Open, Makena is well known not only for its layout, its excellent daily tournament playing conditions, and helpful professional staff; but also for the best golfing weather to be found anywhere in the world. The North Course goes out of its way to make golfers feel at one with their natural surroundings. The South Course is a 6,739-yard, par 72 course with natural rolling fairways, undulating greens, and capitivating ocean and mountain views. The South Course also boasts one of Hawaii?s top driving holes.
Makena North Golf Course
The Makena North Course is a 6,914-yard, par-72 championship layout featuring hilly terrain and challenging holes. Like Makena South, it comes from part of the original 18-hole golf course Makena constructed in 1981. In 1993, it was split in two, with a new nine added to each original side to create a 36-hole complex that is among the best in Hawaii. Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed them all. The North Course is designed with an eye on maintaining the environmental and archaeological elements of the area. The result is a very challenging golf course, set amidst an unspoiled Hawaiian landscape.

Makena South Course
The
Makena South Course combines a new and old set of nines, creating a
very challenging and scenic layout. So much so, in fact, that the
Callaway State Open returned to this special venue, after a run at
Mauna Kea. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the South draws upon
the natural terrain and flora to create a golf course infused with a
distinctive character. The South Course is a 7,017-yard, par-72 with
rolling fairways, undulating and fast greens. Hole #4 is a difficult
407-yard, par-4 that dog-legs around a lake. The par-3 No. 5, is 200
yards of carry to a green well-flanked by bunkers, and with a ravine on
the right. The #10 hole, at 514 yards, features a lake on the right
that comes into play off the tee, and a pond on the left that comes
into play on your second and third shots.
Wailea Golf Club
Known
as the "Grand Lady" of Maui's resort courses, the Blue Course is
elegantly laid out amidst the affluent architecture and impeccable
landscaping of Wailea. The Emerald Course is one of the newest courses
on Maui. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., it is a par-72,
stretching 6,825 yards, and was designed to be a "pure golf"
experience, with a backdrop resembling a tropical garden.
The Gold
Course is a par-72 layout stretching 7,070 yards across the lower
slopes of Mount Haleakala in south Maui. The design concept behind the
Gold was to create a classical, rugged style of course-one that takes
advantage of the natural sloping terrain and incorporates the best
design elements of other world-renowned golf courses. Architect: Robert
Trent Jones Jr.

Wailea Golf Club Blue Course
The
first course ever built in Wailea, the stately Blue is a gracious
resort course that has been ranked among America's best resort courses
by Golf Digest. In its lifetime, it has hosted such prestigious events
as the LPGA Women's Kemper Open and Japan's Asahi-Kyosen pro/celebrity
golf tournament. The Blue's fairways offer views of the ocean and Mt.
Haleakala, and some of Wailea's stunning residential communities. It
features several fountains and lakes, and an abundance of colorful
hibiscus, wiliwili trees, bougainvillea and plumeria. The Blue was
designed to appeal to a broad range of players. While it has challenged
some of the finest professional players in the world, it also offers a
measure of forgiveness in its wider fairways and large greens.
Wailea Golf Club Emerald Course
Rated
one of the best new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, as well
as one of North America's most women-friendly by Golf for Women, the
Wailea Emerald is akin to a lush tropical playground. Flowers bloom in
great abundance: plumeria, bird of paradise, allamanda, gazenia,
bougainvillea, beach morning glory, "firecracker" plants and more. But
don't be fooled by the Emerald's pleasant appearance. It is a superbly
designed course created for pure golf enjoyment, regardless of one's
handicap. Measuring 6,825 yards from the back, the Emerald features four
to six tee boxes on every hole, allowing players to tailor the course
to their playing level. Notable features include a large double green
shared by holes #10 and #17. Fronting the green is the only lake on the
course. This is perhaps one of the Emerald's more picturesque spots.

Wailea Golf Club Gold Course
The
Wailea Gold Course is the most challenging of Wailea's trio. Designed
by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., it has been ranked among the country's best
new courses by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, and one of the world's
best designed by the readers of Conde Nast Traveler. Jones flavored the
Gold with elements of classic golf course design, then finished it with
a rugged, natural look. Throughout the course are stark lava rock
outcroppings, indigenous Hawaiian grasses, an abundance of kiawe (a
relative of mesquite), and remnants of papohaku, prehistoric lava rock
walls built by early Hawaiians and preserved for their historic value.
The Gold's 200 foot elevation change from top to bottom enhances the
numerous ocean and mountain vistas available from virtually every hole.
The course has been labeled a "thinking player's" course because it
demands strategy and careful club selection to be played well.
