Makena Wailea Beaches
Each
of the five crescent-shaped beaches that Wailea offers has a unique
charm. These little beauties are crescent shaped oasis of white sand
that usually end in lava outcroppings at both ends. This makes for
sheltered swimmable waters and good snorkeling. Since most of the hotel
guests seem to prefer to remain near the hotel pools these beaches are
surprisingly uncrowded. Listed below is a brief overview of the various Maui beaches.
Keawakapu Beach
This
is a beautiful beach with lots of sand on shore and in the water making
for great swimming. Few tourists visit this beach as large homes front
the beach area and make access more difficult to locate. Because this
beach is located on Maui's driest coast, you are almost guaranteed of a
sunny day here.
Wailea Beach
Huge
black lava formations flank the fine golden sand of Wailea Beach on
Maui Island in Hawaii, making it the perfect place for serene swimming
or sunbathing. The waves are clear and big enough for experienced
surfers without being intimidating for beginners, and the sunsets here
are famous. Best of all, several luxurious properties have direct
access to the beach, including The Four Seasons Resort and The Grand
Wailea.
Palauea Beach
The
beach has reef formations at both ends. Holoa Point is a point of land
at the south end of the beach. There is a section of reef that extends
for several hundred yards, both out to sea and further down the
shoreline. There's very interesting underwater topography near the
point. Small caves and ledges offer concealment for turtles, fish and
the occasional reef shark. Lava arches rear up from sand channels
between the rocks and coral heads. There are turtles all over,
sometimes rays and white tip reef sharks are seen patrolling the reefs.
There are plenty of colorful reef fish, octopus, angler fish, surgeon
fish, tangs, sergeant majors, moorish idols, and goat fish.
Polo Beach
This
is a lovely sand and rock beach with clear water for swimming and
excellent snorkeling. While in the water, be careful of the slippery
rocks. The beach is long and wide with sand dunes located inland. The
beach is fronted by the Kea Lani Resort.
Mokapu Beach
This
is an excellent beach for families. It is located just a mile down from
South Kihei Road. Mornings here offer ideal snorkeling conditions,
while afternoons are good for sunning and evenings feature gorgeous
Maui sunsets.
Ulua Beach
Two
beaches are accessed by the same path - the one on the right is Mokapu
which fronts the Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort and the one on the
left is Ulua Beach. Ulua is the most popular of the two and was named
one of the Top 10 Most Beautiful Beaches in America. This beach was
named for an offshore island and bird sanctuary that was destroyed
during WWII artillery practice. The beach is great for swimming with
its sandy bottom. Snorkeling and diving in the area is fairly good also
although the water is sometimes cloudy. The area around the rocky point
at the south end of Ulua is the best.
